Structures: Form and Function

Our second unit of study for Science will be Structures. Our Learning Goals for this unit are for students to have an understanding that structures have a purpose. They will be engaging in activities and experiments to determine how the form of a structure is dependent on its function. They will also look at how the interactions between structures and force are predictable.

We have completed our bridge building project and are now looking forward to our cross-district Inquiry project. More info. coming soon!!

Inquiry Fair to take place on March 5th!!

UNIT 3:

HEAT!!

Our third current unit of study for Science will be on HEAT. Our Learning Goals for this unit are for students to have an understanding that heat is a form of energy that can be transformed and transferred. These processes can be explained using the particle theory of matter. There are many sources of heat and has both positive and negative effects on the environment. See STUDY SHEET FOR TEST BELOW:

MINI - SCIENCE INQUIRY- This will be a culminating activity designed to assess the expectations in this HEAT unit. In this activity, students will design and test a drink container to keep a liquid hot for a minimum of 10 minutes. Students will be given in-class time to design their container and build the container and one period in the following week to test it. Please see specifics below:

UNIT 1 - Unit 1 is now complete!

Our first unit in Science is on Interactions in the Environment. Our Learning Goals will be for students to have an understanding of ecosystems and how they are made up of biotic and abiotic elements. It will also focus on how ecosystems are in a constant state of change. The final big idea will centre around how human activities have the potential to alter the environment and how we must be aware of our impact. We will be participating in a number of activities and experiments. We visited Geneva Park on October 15, 2014, with a focus on these big ideas! We also had "Kids For Turtles" visit our classrooms on October 14th (with a variety of turtles) to speak about the environmental impact we are having on their habitats. Lastly, students were asked to build a mini ecosystem. (Project expectations and rubric below). THE FINAL DATE TO BRING IT IN WAS SEPTEMBER 29th!
SUCCESS CRITERIA: Remember the project must include a detailed, coloured diagram with labels. You should also have a prepared explanation of your ecosystem, explaining your consumers, producers and how all 5 basic needs are being met! This will be presented in front of the class.
